The European Union will allocate further 152.05 million euros ($172 million) in humanitarian aid to address challenges facing Africa's Sahel region, the European Commission said in a press release on Tuesday
"As countries in the Sahel continue to suffer from armed conflicts, climate change, and a food and nutrition crisis, the EU is providing 152.05 million to bring relief to people in need in the region. Combined with last year's funding, humanitarian assistance to the Sahel has been supported with over 423 million in EU aid, making the EU a leading donor in the region," the statement read.
The humanitarian aid package will cover seven countries, including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria, according to the statement.
The Sahel region is suffering from extreme weather, armed conflicts and high insecurity, among other issues. According to the EU commission, up to 2.8 million children in the region are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.
