EU Commission Vice-President Says UK Might Remain Member of EU Customs Union After Brexit

EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans said on Saturday that the United Kingdom could continue to be a member of the EU Customs Union after Brexit.<

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th March, 2019) EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans said on Saturday that the United Kingdom could continue to be a member of the EU Customs Union after Brexit.

"Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been proposing for a long time for the UK to leave the EU, but to remain in the customs union.

Perhaps the majority in the UK parliament will support it ... The UK citizens voted to leave the EU, not the customs union," Timmermans told Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper in an interview.

After repeated failed attempts to pass the government's Brexit deal, the UK parliament backed a motion seeking to extend the withdrawal period beyond March 29 on Thursday. The plan now needs to be agreed upon by 27 EU member states.
