Europe's consumer groups are calling on EU leaders to advance their discussions on low-carbon cars, expressing concern that these negotiations are stalling, the European Consumer Organization BEUC said in a statement on Monday.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) Europe's consumer groups are calling on EU leaders to advance their discussions on low-carbon cars, expressing concern that these negotiations are stalling, the European Consumer Organization BEUC said in a statement on Monday.
"Today, consumer groups remind EU decision-makers that only with swift EU action on CO2 emissions will consumers have wider choice in choosing fuel-efficient and low-carbon cars (such as electric ones)," the statement read.
The group cited a tweet by Miriam Dalli, the European Parliament member from Malta, posted on December 5 and saying that there was "no movement" from the Council of the European Union on major issues related to the EU's CO2 regulation.
"Only with sufficient choice can people make their own cost/benefit analysis whether to opt for electric, hybrid or a more fuel-efficient conventional car. And this is important as people across Europe might have different mobility needs, driving habits and preferences," the BEUC said.
On October 10, the Council of the European Union agreed on its position on a regulation tightening CO2 emission standards for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The EU environment ministers agreed to on CO2 cuts for passenger cars by 35 percent in 2030.
