EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maja Kocijancic extended on Friday condolences on behalf of the European Union to the families of the victims of the ferry accident, which left at least 96 people killed in northern Iraq
A tourist ferry with dozens of people aboard capsized in the Tigris River in the Iraqi city of Mosul on Thursday. Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi declared three-day mourning over the deadly accident on the same day.
"The EU expresses its deep sorrow at the loss of many lives, including many children, when a ferry sank in the Tigris River in Mosul yesterday while people were celebrating the Nowruz holiday, on the first day of spring.
The EU presents its sincere condolences to the families of the victims in the tragic accident," Kocijancic said in a statement.
According to preliminary data, the accident might have been caused by the excessive number of passengers. The second possible cause behind the accident is the increased water level in the Tigris River provoked by the opening of floodgates in the Mosul Dam.
