EU Says Not Considering Golan Part of Israel's Territory, Brussels' Position Unchanged

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) The European Union does not consider territories, occupied by Israel since June 1967, including the Golan Heights, part of the Israeli territory, the bloc's spokesperson said, adding that Brussels' position on this issue has not changed in the wake of Washington's announcement about the recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the area.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said it was time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan.

"The position of the EU has not changed. The European Union, in line with international law, does not recognise Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967, including the Golan Heights, and does not consider them to be part of Israel's territory," the spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

Golan Heights is the zone at the Syrian-Israeli border which has been under the control of Israel since it captured the area from Damascus during the Six-Day War in 1967.

In its resolutions, the UN Security Council has repeatedly said it does not recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan and called on Israel to abandon its claims over the area.
