Europa Nostra, a leading pan-European federation for cultural heritage, pins hopes on a miraculous survival of the original stained glass in the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the organization's secretary general, Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, told Sputnik
A massive fire broke out at the iconic cathedral on Monday evening, causing the collapse of the Notre Dame spire and the two-thirds of the roof. The blaze was fully extinguished only on Tuesday morning.
"This is not yet clear, but we are all fearing that some of the stained glass was lost because of the heat of the fire. Just now I have read one comment that perhaps on the northern side it seems to still be standing, so we are hoping that perhaps there is a miracle. It is a place of worship, so people are now hoping for some miracle," Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic said.
She noted that everybody was in "a state of shock" over the "irreplaceable and irreparable loss.
The secretary general of Europa Nostra recalled that many parts of the cathedral that had now been lost were original. Some parts of the collapsed wooden roof, for instance, dated back to the 13th century, she pointed out.
"You can reconstruct and rebuild of course, and build something new, but it will always be a reconstruction," she concluded, describing the loss inflicted by the fire as "colossal" both for France and the whole European civilization.
French President Emmanuel Macron has described the inferno at the cathedral as a "terrible tragedy" and promised to rebuild the 850-year-old cathedral. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and several European nations have already expressed readiness to contribute to restoring Notre-Dame de Paris.
