MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) President of the European Council Donald Tusk said on Thursday that he would urge the bloc members ahead of the meeting of the European Council to support a significant extension of the Brexit deadline if the UK parliament votes in favor of the option.
On Wednesday, UK lawmakers rejected the idea of leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement after voting down the updated Brexit deal that Prime Minister Theresa May negotiated with Tusk in Brussels. The vote on the extension of the Brexit deadline will take place on Thursday evening.
"During my consultations ahead of #EUCO, I will appeal to the EU27 to be open to a long extension if the UK finds it necessary to rethink its #Brexit strategy and build consensus around it," Tusk tweeted.
The Brexit-focused meeting of the European Council is scheduled to take place on March 21-22.
