MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) The events in Venezuela are an attempt to usurp power in that country, it violates the foundations of international law, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.
"We believe the attempt to usurp supreme power in Venezuela contradicts international law and violates its foundations and principles. This is the basis of our position," Peskov told journalists.
He said Venezuela had not asked Russia for assistance yet over the internal political crisis in that country, and added that Russia was not in contact with the United States on the situation.
Peskov said any outside attempts to use military force to influence events in Venezuela were dangerous, adding that Russia was concerned about statements on possible interference of third countries in Venezuelan developments.
The Kremlin spokesman said Venezuela should be sovereign in organizing political dialogue between the opposing sides, and noted that Caracas was an important economic partner of Moscow, and that Russia was interested in maintaining and improving friendly ties with Venezuela.
