Fiji Prime Minister Calls for Creation of Legal Regime to Tackle Climate-Induced Migration

The Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) call for the creation of an international legal framework that will address displacement caused by the effects of climate change, Frank Bainimarama, the prime minister of Fiji, said on Thursday.

KATOWICE (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) The Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) call for the creation of an international legal framework that will address displacement caused by the effects of climate change, Frank Bainimarama, the prime minister of Fiji, said on Thursday.

"We are deeply alarmed at the growing number of people displaced by the effects of climate change. While we acknowledge that the Global Compact on Migration recognizes climate change as a driver of displacement and migration, we call for the development of an international legal regime and support a framework based on human rights to protect people displaced by climate change," Bainimarama said at a press conference at the Katowice Climate Change Conference.

On Monday, the UN-backed Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) was adopted by 164 countries at a summit in Marrakesh. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the document provided a platform for "humane, sensible, mutually beneficial action" on migration.
