Former NFL Seahawks coach Chuck Knox dies at 86

Los Angeles, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th May, 2018 ) :Former NFL coach Chuck Knox, whose 80 wins with Seattle are the second-most of any coach in Seahawks history, has died at the age of 86 after battling dementia, his family said Sunday.

Knox's granddaughter Lee Ann posted a tweet on Sunday confirming he had died. "RIP Popster. I'll miss you forever," she wrote, posting a picture of herself as a child with Knox. "You have always been my dad.

You gave me more guidance, hope, encouragement than anyone ever has. I will treasure you forever. No one else will ever compare." No cause of death was given, but Knox had battled dementia in recent years.

The Seahawks Legends website offered a tribute to Knox, who coached the Seahawks for nine seasons from 1983-1991, finishing with an 80-63 regular-season record with the club. He was Seattle's winningest coach until being surpassed by Mike Holmgren in 2007.

Knox, who also coached the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, was named NFL coach of the year three times. Knox recorded a 186-147 record in the regular season. His clubs, however, combined for just a 7-11 mark in the playoffs.

His emphasis on the running game led to his nickname "Ground Chuck" and made stars of running backs Curt Warner and John L. Williams. Knox started his NFL career as an offensive line coach with the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions.

After his stints leading the Rams and bills, Knox arrived in Seattle in 1983 and guided the young club to a first playoff appearance that season. The first NFL coach to win a division title with three different teams, he guided Seattle to their first AFC West crown in 1988.

"He brought stability to the Seahawks," said former defensive end Jacob Green in comments posted on the team's website. "We were one of the teams to beat."
