Former president of Ethiopia, Negasso Gidada, passed away on Saturday, aged 75, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 27th April, 2019) Former president of Ethiopia, Negasso Gidada, passed away on Saturday, aged 75, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said.

"It is with deep regrets that we share the passing of former FDRE [Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia] President, H.E. Dr. Negasso Gidada. PM [Prime Minister] Abiy Ahmed extends his condolences to the people of Ethiopia and his family.

A national committee to oversee the funeral arrangements is being established & will share details," the office wrote on Twitter.

According to media reports, Negasso passed away in Germany, where he had been receiving medical treatment for an unspecified illness.

Negasso became the first president of Ethiopia after it became a parliamentary republic. He was in power from 1995 to 2001. Before taking office, he served as the chairman of the Constitutional Assembly that adopted the Ethiopian constitution, which still remains intact.
