A growing number of Americans believe US President Donald Trump has the personality and leadership qualities of a commander in chief, but he still trails his predecessors Barack Obama and George W. Bush by a wide margin, a new Gallup polled showed on Tuesday
"More Americans today (40%) than two years ago (33%) believe President Donald Trump has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have, although that still represents a minority of the public," Gallup said. "In contrast, roughly six in 10 Americans thought George W. Bush and Barack Obama had the right presidential characteristics at a similar point in their presidencies."
The poll found that despite his improved ratings, Trump's character remains a weakness for him.
Neither Obama nor Bush ever a character rating lower than 49 percent during their presidencies, Gallup noted.
The survey also found that Americans evaluate Trump more positively for his issue positions than for his character, with 47 percent saying they agree with the president on issues that matter most to them. On the question of issues, Trump scores about the same as Obama (45 percent) and Bush (53 percent).
The results of the poll are based on phone interviews conducted from April 17-30, with a random sample of 1,024 adults across the US. The poll's margin of sampling error is 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
