MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) France is launching preparations for a no-deal Brexit and setting aside 50 million Euros (or about $57 million) for French ports and airports that are likely to be most concerned by a hard Brexit, as one of the measures, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said Thursday.
On Tuesday, a withdrawal deal negotiated by the European Union and the UK government was defeated in the UK House of Commons, which leaves UK Prime Minister Theresa May at an impasse with UK exit date set for March 29.
"The idea of a no-deal Brexit is becoming less and less improbable ... I have made a decision to launch a plan linked to a no-deal Brexit, 'hard' Brexit, as it is sometimes called.
This plan has been in the making since April 2018 ... We have decided to launch a plan, of about 50 million euros of investment in French ports and airports that are, obviously, most concerned by modifications required for hard Brexit," Philippe told reporters after a government meeting on Brexit preparations.
The prime minister added that the investment measures for transport hubs would be launched in the coming days.
According to Philippe, the plan also focuses on legal measures that protects the rights of French citizens and businesses. The French government has proposed to the French parliament to pass a law that would allow the executive branch to adopt relevant decrees, Philippe said.
