TEL AVIV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) French President Emmanuel Macron said during his first official trip to Israel on Wednesday that his country was determined to deny Iran a nuclear weapon.
"We are uncompromising when it comes to the nuclear issue... In the current context, France remains committed to keeping Iran from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon but also to avoiding any military escalation in the region," he said.
Macron spoke alongside Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. He also meets Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a working breakfast. The talks were held ahead of this Thursday's forum marking 75 years since the liberation of Nazis' Auschwitz death camp by Soviet troops.
Earlier in January, Iran rolled back core commitments set out in the 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers after the United States withdrew from the pact in 2018 and reimposed economic sanctions on Tehran.
France, Germany and the United Kingdom have triggered a dispute mechanism that could punish Iran with more sanctions. The Iranian foreign minister wanted the trio that his country would quit the deal if the UN Security Council was involved.
