France's Republicans Consider Barnier's Candidacy To Lead Party In EU Election - Reports

France's The Republicans (LR), headed by Laurent Wauquiez, is considering nominating Michel Barnier, the European Union's chief negotiator for Brexit, as the party's candidate for European Commission president in the upcoming election to the European Parliament.

"There are many possibilities and this one is among them," a source close to the LR president confirmed to France's Le Monde newspaper on Monday.
According to the news outlet, French President Emmanuel Macron's ruling La Republique En Marche! (LREM) party was also considering Barnier as a candidate.
Barnier previously headed the Union for a Popular Movement party, led by then French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in the Parisian region of Ile-de-France in the 2009 European Parliament election.
The next European Parliament election is expected to take place in May 2019.
