Thierry Mariani, a candidate in the upcoming elections to the European Parliament and the head of the Franco-Russian Dialogue Association, voiced the belief on Saturday that Russia's Crimea could resemble the famous French Riviera resorts if only anti-Russia sanctions were removed
Mariani, who heads the French delegation that is currently on a visit to Crimea, praised the development of the region, mentioning the new terminal of Sevastopol's airport in particular.
"A great amount of very important works are being carried out under the leadership of [the head of the Crimean parliament Vladimir] Konstantinov. Once sanctions are removed, Crimea will turn into a real French Riviera," Mariani said.
He added that the members of the French delegation, which comprises lawmakers and representatives of municipal authorities, felt at home in Crimea.
The French politician also praised the high quality of the locally produced wine.
Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, when 97 percent of those who participated in the referendum on the matter supported the reunification. The reunification was not recognized by Ukraine or Western states, which subsequently imposed economic and political sanctions on Moscow. Russia has repeatedly stated that the referendum was conducted in compliance with international law.
