The German government has passed a bill authorizing the indication of a third gender for intersex people in civil status books, the German Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.
BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) The German government has passed a bill authorizing the indication of a third gender for intersex people in civil status books, the German Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.
"The Federal Cabinet has today adopted a draft law amending the Civil Status Act. When a child is born, his or her gender must be recorded in the birth register. [At the moment,] for children who cannot be assigned either the female or male gender, birth certificates without a gender indication could be issued. In accordance with the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court of October 10, 2017, this provision does not comply with the Constitution .
.. The [proposed] bill stipulates that the registrar could assign a 'different' [gender] in addition to the options already provided," the ministry said in a statement.
The Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Interior Ministry, Dr. Guenter Krings, noted that the proposed law has nothing to do with legislation related to transsexual people.
The bill should be considered by the Bundestag before being signed into law.
