Frankfurt, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2021 ) :A German environmental group on Tuesday said it was suing car giants BMW and Daimler to force them to reduce emissions faster, following recent court victories for climate activists.
The NGO Environmental Action Germany (DUH) submitted applications to courts in Stuttgart and Munich on Monday evening, arguing the carmakers needed to set themselves more ambitious climate goals, including ending the sale of fossil-fuel cars by 2030.
In early September, DUH and Greenpeace sent letters to the two carmakers, as well as Volkswagen and gas company Wintershall asking them to commit to more ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions.
In their response to DUH, BMW said it had taken account of its "responsibility and is making its contribution" with regards to tackling climate change.
In a surprise ruling, the court found that Germany's plans to curb CO2 emissions were insufficient to meet the targets of the Paris climate agreement and placed an unfair burden on future generations.
The decision implied there is a "basic right to climate protection," DUH lawyer Remo Klinger said.
In a separate action, DUH also supported legal action against five German states earlier this month over their alleged failure to legislate appropriately in response to climate change.
