Germany has updated its travel advisory for Uzbekistan, warning nationals of Islamist groups operating in Central Asia, just days before a working visit by the Uzbek president

BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th January, 2019) Germany has updated its travel advisory for Uzbekistan, warning nationals of Islamist groups operating in Central Asia, just days before a working visit by the Uzbek president.

"Despite a generally calm situation in Uzbekistan, there is still latent threat coming from Islamist-oriented extremist groups," the German foreign office said.

It indicated that until now this threat had not been directed at tourists, but urged citizens to "exercise caution" and avoid traveling to border regions.

The recommendations were strengthened ahead of the visit this Monday by Uzbekistan's Shavkat Mirziyoyev who is expected to meet with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Chancellor Angela Merkel during a three-day trip to Berlin.
