BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th October, 2018) Alternative for Germany (AfD) right-wing party believes that it won the election in the parliament of the country's state of Bavaria since it has managed to increase the voters' support for the party in the state more than any other political force, AfD co-chair Jorg Meuthen said on Monday.
On Sunday, the German state of Bavaria held election in the unicameral Landtag. According to the preliminary information, the AfD received 10.2 percent of votes.
"We are very happy with the election's results ... The fact that [we received] only 10.2 percent of the vote is disappointing for some, because one can always aim high. But we see that there has been fierce competition, Bavaria, as we all know, has its own specificity, there is the Free Voters party, whose electoral programs are very similar to ours ... But we won this election because as a result we have secured the largest increase of votes [in our support] from zero, in fact, to 10.
2 percent," Meuthen indicated.
According to Meuthen, the election in Bavaria's legislature was the least successful for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), whose support in the state fell by half.
"It is a global change which is ongoing: the old parties are in decline, while the new parties are growing, and [among the new parties] we are the most successful," Meuthen stressed.
According to the preliminary information provided by the state's local election commission, Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU), the sister party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, won Sunday election with 37.2 percent of votes. The Greens came second with 17.5 percent, while Free Voters party showed third result receiving 11.6 percent of the votes. The AfD has managed to secure the fourth place and is followed by the SPD (9.7 percent of votes) and the Free Democratic Party (5.1 percent of votes).
