MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th March, 2019) Greece expects that more than one million Russian tourists will visit the country in 2019 due to a 15 percent increase in hospitality industry bookings compared to March 2018, Greek Minister of Tourism Elena Kountoura told Sputnik.
"In 2018, approximately one million Russian tourists visited Greece. We expect to see a rise in these numbers in 2019 due to the fact that we are already seeing a 15 percent increase in bookings compared to the same time last year," the minister said.
Kountoura also mentioned the fact that last year was the Greece-Russia Year of Tourism, during which both countries hosted many cultural events to attract investment and promote tourism.
The minister noted that both Russia and Greece made an accent on promoting their regions to attract people to explore their "hidden gems."
Despite Greece's economic crisis, tourism continues to provide a stable source of income for the country. Yiannis Retsos, the head of the Greek Tourism Confederation, estimated that in 2018, the tourism industry brought 16 billion Euros (almost $18 billion) in direct revenues and accounted for 17 percent of the country's jobs.
