Guatemala City, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Dec, 2018 ) :Guatemalan anti-narcotics agents with US military support have seized 4.3 tonnes of cocaine found floating in Pacific waters, prosecutors said Sunday.
The drugs, which were believed to have originated in Ecuador, were found floating in 113 packages on Saturday and were taken to a military base in the southern town of San Jose, according to prosecutors.
The seizure followed "a combined operation of Guatemalan naval forces with the armed forces of the United States of America, through information provided by Ecuador," prosecutors said.
The would-be traffickers tossed the drugs overboard "on the high seas" when they saw authorities approaching. There were no arrests.
Last year the Central American country seized a record 13.6 tonnes of cocaine, surpassing the record set in 2016 of 12.8 tonnes.
US authorities say 90 percent of the cocaine arriving in that country comes in on small planes, boats and even submarines.
