Guterres to be ninth UN chief

NEW YORK, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 06th Oct, 2016 ) : Portugal's former premier Antonio Guterres, who led the United Nations refugee agency for a decade, will be the ninth secretary-general to head the world body since it was created in 1945.

All of the world's regions have been represented at some point -- with the exception of eastern Europe, whose candidate, the Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva, lost out to Guterres in the contest. No woman has occupied the strategic post to date.
