Haley Unveils Over $185Mln in Humanitarian Aid for Myanmar, Bangladesh - US Mission to UN

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley unveiled more than $185 million in additional US humanitarian assistance for Myanmar and Bangladesh to address the refugee crisis, Washington's mission to the United Nations said in a press release.

"Today, during a ministerial-level meeting on Burma [Myanmar], Ambassador Nikki Haley announced more than $185 million in additional humanitarian assistance for those in Burma and Bangladesh who have been affected by the Rakhine State crisis," the release said on Monday.

The new funding, the release added, includes $156 million for emergency services, shelter, food, healthcare and psychosocial support for Rohingya refugees and host communities.

The current contribution brings the total of US aid to Myanmar to nearly $389 million since the beginning of the crisis in 2017.

Myanmar's Rakhine state has witnessed mass killings and atrocities against the Rohingya since August 2017. According to the UN Human Rights Council, Myanmar's government failed to prevent the violence against civilian populations.
