Head of the South Korean ruling Democratic Party (Minjoo) Lee Hae-chan met on Thursday with Ri Jong Hyok, vice chairman of the North Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee (KAPPC) and discussed bilateral cooperation, Minjoo spokesman Lee hae-sik said.
Ri was leading a five-member North Korean delegation that attended an international forum in the South Korean city of Goyang.
"They mostly talked about forestry cooperation, cultural exchange and tourism ... They also talked about Mount Kumgang and the Kaesong industrial complex and shared the hope that South Koreans could visit Mount Paektu in the future," Lee told reporters, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.
During the talks, Ri expressed a hope that tree nurseries could be created to restore destroyed forests in North Korea.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has improved since the beginning of this year, with North Korean leader Kim Jon Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in having held several meetings. In June, Kim also reached an agreement with US President Donald Trump, stipulating that North Korea would make efforts to promote complete denuclearization of the peninsula in exchange for US-South Korean military drills' freeze and a potential removal of US sanctions.
