Human Rights Organization Says 152 Detained in 3 Days of Protests in Venezuela

BUENOS AIRES (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) As many as 152 people have been detained since the start of nationwide protests in Venezuela on Monday, Alfredo Romero, the head of the Venezuelan Foro Penal human rights organization, said.

Romero said on Twitter that nine people were detained on Monday, 34 were detained on Tuesday and 109 on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself the country's interim president. The United States urged Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down and let Guaido to assume the presidency. Maduro called Guaido "the US puppet" and said that Venezuela was severing diplomatic ties with Washington.

So far, along with the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Peru have recognized Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.�
