Hundreds of women blocked off Avenue 9 de Julio, the largest street of the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, for a rally dedicated to fight for women's rights, a Sputnik correspondent reported
BUENOS AIRES (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 09th March, 2019) Hundreds of women blocked off Avenue 9 de Julio, the largest street of the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, for a rally dedicated to fight for women's rights, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
Demonstrations against violence and abortion ban and those in support of equal rights being held across Argentina on the International Women's Day celebrated on Friday.
The manifestations held in Buenos Aires are peaceful. Police have not reported any incidents during the rallies.
However, the normal flow of traffic has been blocked in the capital.
The participants of the women's rights demonstration, both young and older women, are beating drums, dancing and shouting anti-violence slogans.
All the rally participants are wearing green, symbolizing disagreement with the abortion ban, and purple, associated with feminism and the fight against violence.
According to Argentine's National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, over the past five years, the authorities have registered 576,000 cases of violence against women aged over 14. The statistics showed, that 66.6 percent of the targeted females were aged between 18 and 39. Notably, in 82.1 percent of cases, the women were attacked by their husbands, former husbands, fiances or ex-boyfriends. Over 48 percent of women older than 50 years said they had experienced aggression by their children.
