MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will continue to strengthen its relations with Russia, valuing the role that the country has taken as an ICRC donor, Magne Barth, the head of the regional delegation of the ICRC in Russia, Belarus and Moldova told Sputnik on Thursday.
"Cooperation with Russia is very important for the ICRC, we can see that this cooperation is strengthening. To illustrate how important for us to interact with Russia on humanitarian issues I will just mention that our President Peter Maurer visited Russia three times last year. Also Russia has become our donor and we value it.
We will continue strengthening our cooperation with Russia in different fields," Barth said.
Barth stated that one of the functions of the ICRC office in Moscow was its provision of diplomatic and technical support for ICRC's humanitarian operation in Ukraine, which the organization notes is one of the 10 biggest humanitarian operations in the world.
The regional delegation also supports the International Humanitarian Law commissions in Belarus and Moldova, while its Moscow-based experts provide support to other ICRC delegations in the former Soviet Union.
