IFRC Stresses Need to Start Rebuilding Syria as Armed Conflict Enters 9th Year

The need to start rebuilding Syria and creating good living conditions there has never been more urgent than it is now, after eight years of an armed conflict, which seems to be coming to an end, Francesco Rocca, the president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), told Sputnik

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th March, 2019) The need to start rebuilding Syria and creating good living conditions there has never been more urgent than it is now, after eight years of an armed conflict, which seems to be coming to an end, Francesco Rocca, the president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), told Sputnik.

Friday marks eight years since the start of the civil war in Syria.

"The intensity of the fight [in Syria] is decreasing and this is a matter of fact ... It's very important to intervene at this moment, because people could think that with finishing the war, the emergency is over, but now it's really time to rebuild ... It's about rebuilding houses, creating opportunities for jobs, livelihood, this is something extremely important so that the community could really restart its life," Rocca said.

According to the IFRC president, now is the moment to start working on creating favorable conditions to rebuild trust in the country which "has been so polarized for so long."

"So it's extremely important to work with humanitarian actors on the ground, from our perspective," he added.

As the armed conflict in Syria seems to be nearing its end and Damascus has regained control over the vast territories that were previously controlled by terrorist groups and rebels, Syria has already launched the reconstruction process and started welcoming back the refugees.
