India's SpiceJet to Demand Compensation From Boeing After 737 MAX Grounding - Executive

Indian airline SpiceJet airline will seek compensation from Boeing after grounding its 737 MAX jets in the aftermath of the deadly crash in Ethiopia involving this aircraft model, a senior executive of the company said on Thursday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) Indian airline SpiceJet airline will seek compensation from Boeing after grounding its 737 MAX jets in the aftermath of the deadly crash in Ethiopia involving this aircraft model, a senior executive of the company said on Thursday.

"We will seek compensation from Boeing for the grounding of the planes. We will also seek recompensation for revenue loss and any kind of maintenance or technical overhaul that the aircraft will have to undergo. This is part of the contract, which we signed with Boeing for all the 737 MAX aircraft," the SpiceJet executive said, as quoted by the business Standard newspaper.

SpiceJet's current fleet of 737 MAX aircraft includes 13 planes but was supposed to get 15 more this year, according to the newspaper.

The company planned to acquire as many as 192 of these 737 MAX jets.

An Ethiopian Airlines' Boeing 737 MAX crashed minutes after its departure from Addis Ababa on Sunday. All 157 people on board the plane were killed. Another Boeing 737 MAX of Indonesia's Lion Air crashed in October, claiming lives of 189 people.

The situation around the Boeing 737 MAX series has prompted dozens of countries to either ground these planes or close their airspace to them.

Boeing, in turn, said in a statement on Wednesday that it had "full confidence" in the safety of its 737 MAX aircraft but supported the decision to temporarily ground the entire fleet of 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9 planes in the wake of the deadly crash in Ethiopia.
