Iranian Navy Chief Vows to Boost Country's Presence in International Waters in Next Decade

The Iranian Navy will acquire a "more meaningful presence" in oceans and other international waters over the next 10 years, Navy Commander Rear Adm. Hossein Khanzadi said on Monday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th February, 2019) The Iranian Navy will acquire a "more meaningful presence" in oceans and other international waters over the next 10 years, Navy Commander Rear Adm. Hossein Khanzadi said on Monday.

"In the fifth decade of the Islamic Revolution [1979], there will be more growth and prosperity, and the Iranian nation will witness Navy's more meaningful presence in oceans and international waters," Khanzadi said on the 40th anniversary of the end of the Islamic revolution, as quoted by the Mehr news Agency.

Khanzadi also noted that a domestically designed Fateh-class semi-heavy submarine would enter service with the navy by March 20.

The Iranian navy has been seeking to boost its presence at sea amid a new escalation of tensions with the United States following the latter's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and reimpose economic sanctions on Tehran.

In particular, Tehran carried out drills in the Strait of Hormuz in January, a strategically important route for oil exports from the region. Iran also previously threatened to block this key sea route if Washington blocked its oil exports.
