MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) The Iraqi military intelligence averted a major terrorist attack in the country's western province of Anbar amid Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the Iraqi military said in a statement on Thursday.
"The units of the military intelligence department of the 7th division with the participation of the deputy commander of the division and intelligence of the 29th brigade and battalion's division and in cooperation with the air forces of the international coalition managed to prevent a major terrorist attack, which was aimed at innocent citizens on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr in the area of al-Baghdadi in Anbar province," the statement said.
The statement noted that as many as seven terrorist wearing suicide vests were killed during the operation. The terrorists were carrying various weapons and improvised explosive devices, according to the defense ministry.
The situation in Iraq has been highly unstable for several years due to activities of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), which seized huge territories in the country in 2014. Despite the fact that the occupied land was retaken by the Iraqi government troops, terrorists are staging regular attacks on the country's troops and civilians.
