MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th May, 2019) Iraqi Kurdistan's parliament will elect the region's new president on Tuesday, local media reported on Sunday, citing the legislature.
The NRT broadcaster specified that a total of five candidates were running for the post, including the region's incumbent Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.
The post of the regional president has been vacant since November 1, 2017, when Masoud Barzani resigned after Kurdistan's independence referendum. The presidential powers have since been redistributed among legislative, executive and judiciary branches, with the post suspended until the September 2018 parliamentary elections.
Earlier in May, the newly-elected regional parliament approved legislation that reinstated the presidential post, changing the method of electing regional head from a public vote to a parliamentary one until Kurdistan's constitution has been enacted.
