Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Iraq at a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov, the prime minister's press service said on Tuesday.
"Mr Bogdanov has delivered President Putin's invitation to visit Russia to the head of the cabinet of ministers, Adel Abdul Mahdi, while Mr Mahdi, in turn, extended an invitation to visit Iraq to Putin," the press service said.
According to the press service, the Iraqi prime minister received Bogdanov accompanied by the Russian delegation in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.
Bogdanov and Mahdi have discussed at the meeting the strengthening of bilateral ties on security, economy, trade, investment, energy and in other fields, the press service added.
Bogdanov has also conveyed a message from Putin and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to the Iraqi Prime minister, in which the Russian leadership stressed the need to further develop relations between the two countries and congratulated Mahdi on the government formation.
In May, general parliamentary elections were held in Iraq, after which the elected lawmakers chose the country's president, who, in turn, appointed Mahdi as prime minister. In late October, Mahdi presented his cabinet to the parliament, which approved 14 of the cabinet's 23 ministers on October 25.
