Italy Sent Aircraft to Bolivia to Pick Up Former Militant Battisti - Prime Minister

ROME (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th January, 2019) Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Sunday that the Italian authorities have sent an aircraft to Bolivia to return Cesare Battisti, a former leftist militant wanted for murders, to the country.

Battisti is wanted in Italy on four murder charges dating back to the 1970s when he was part of an outlawed terrorist group. An Italian court gave him a life sentence in absentia in 1993. The former terrorist was arrested in Brazil in 2007 and in 2017 but attempts to get him extradited failed. Then-Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva granted him a political refugee status.

"Our plane is on its way to Bolivia, where it will land at about 5 p.

m. local Italian time [4 p.m GMT] to pick up Battisti and return him to Italy. Here, he is awaited by our prisons, which will carry out life imprisonment sentence," Conte wrote on Facebook.

Earlier in the day, sources in the Italian Interior Ministry told reporters that investigators of the Italian State Police and an agent of the country's foreign intelligence service were aboard the aircraft.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Sunday praised the new Brazilian government, national law enforcement agencies and the Interpol for catching Battisti, in a statement on Facebook, and promised the extremist would spend the rest of his life in jail.
