Italy Should Back Out Of UN Migration Deal - Lega Party

Italy should not sign the UN global migration pact that may threaten the country's sovereignty and the nation's cultural and religious identity, Gianluca Savoini, a member of Italy's Lega party, told Sputnik on Friday.
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is set to be formally adopted at the UN conference in Morocco on December 10-11. Earlier this week, Austria and several other EU countries including the Czech Republic, Croatia and Poland announced that they would not be part of the UN global pact on migration. The United States and Hungary were the first nations which announced their plans not to join the future agreement.
"I hope Italy will not sign this agreement, because, as US President [Donald] Trump says, we must defend our identity and our culture from the invasion of economic immigrants.
We must give a strong and clear signal to human traffickers that we will no longer accept this shameful trafficking. These are decisive years for our European nations. We want to remain Europeans and Christians," Savoini, who is also president of the Lombardia-Russia Cultural Association, said.
The migration pact, approved in July by all UN members except for the United States, aims to make the growing tide of international migration more safe and orderly, and came about as a response to the 2015 migration crisis that hit Europe. Though the treaty is not legally binding, some countries have expressed concerns that the compact could promote the liberalization of border crossing procedures.
