TOKYO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono held a telephone conversation with US State Secretary Mike Pompeo during which the two diplomats discussed the recent high-level summit between South and North Korea, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"The two sides agreed to coordinate their future policies on North Korea taking in consideration the inter-Korean summit, which was held on September 18-19, and reiterated their joint goal to ensure the full implementation of the UN Security Council Resolutions," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Kono and Pompeo also reaffirmed their commitment to maintain close bilateral cooperation and preserve partnership between Japan, South Korea and the United States.
Moreover, the top diplomats exchanged opinions on the situation in Iran.
The Foreign Ministry said earlier in the day that on September 21-30, Kono will travel to Canada and the United States. The minister's US trip will be timed to the ongoing 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Earlier this week, South Korean president Moon Jae-in visited Pyongyang for the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
During the meeting, Kim agreed to allow international experts to monitor the closure of the North Korean Dongchang-ri missile engine testing and launch facility and permanent dismantlement of the nuclear facilities in Yongbyon, as long as the United States carries out agreed-on corresponding actions. Kim and Moon also agreed to end large-scale artillery exercises and flights near the demilitarized zone between the two states.
