TOKYO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th January, 2019) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will pay a visit to Moscow and Davos on January 21-24, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Friday.
"Prime Minister Abe will travel to Moscow, Russia, and Davos, Switzerland, on January 21-24. There will be a meeting at the highest level held in Moscow on January 22, as it was announced after a meeting between the foreign ministers [of Japan and Russia]," Suga said at a press conference.
The agreement to hold talks between Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin was reached last year and confirmed at the talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, last Monday.
The meeting between Lavron and Kono was the first round of Russia-Japan consultations on a peace treaty, which relates to a long-standing territorial dispute over a group of four islands that both countries claim Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai, collectively referred to as the Southern Kurils by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan.
Abe will also attend the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos scheduled for January 22-25.
