Jordan seizes 13 mln captagon pills in 'record' haul

AMMAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -7th Sept,2016) : Jordan said Wednesday it has seized a "record" haul of more than 13 million captagon pills, one of the most commonly-used drugs among fighters in neighbouring Syria.

The interior ministry said three alleged traffickers, including a foreigner, were arrested in what it called "the most important seizure of drug tablets in the kingdom's history". A ministry statement said the pills were discovered hidden inside tumble driers in the house of one of those arrested, near Amman.

Captagon is classified by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime as an "amphetamine-type stimulant" and usually blends amphetamines, caffeine and other substances.

There have been numerous reports of captagon use among groups waging Syria's war.

Jordan's interior ministry said the haul of tablets was bound for "another country" without providing details. In the first half of 2016 Jordanian authorities seized more than six tonnes of illegal drugs and arrested more than 13,000 people on suspicion of smuggling, possessing or using drugs.
