Kazakhstan could serve as a bridge between Russia and the United States, former US House Rep. Curt Weldon told reporters after a Eurasian economic conference in Washington
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) Kazakhstan could serve as a bridge between Russia and the United States, former US House Rep. Curt Weldon told reporters after a Eurasian economic conference in Washington.
"I am very impressed with their leadership and hope that they can play even a more aggressive role," Weldon said on Tuesday. "They can be a bridge between the US and Russia... both the US and Russia get along with Kazakhstan so they can bring us together."
Earlier in the day, Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation.
Presidential election in Kazakhstan is planned to take place in 2020.
Weldon said he sees US-Kazakhstan relations in a "positive" light despite the transition in power.
Nazarbayev, 78, held a number of senior posts in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, which was a part of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nazarbayev remained in power, becoming president of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan.
