Kiev's newly adopted law on the Ukrainian language should be submitted to the Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe, for consideration, Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on Friday
On Thursday, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the law "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language." The legislation provides for the use of the Ukrainian language in almost all spheres of life. It should become mandatory for state authorities and local governments, all educational institutions, hospitals and the service sector.
"We are aware that the Ukrainian Parliament has adopted a new language law. We have stressed repeatedly that Ukrainian authorities should submit this language law for the consideration of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe before its entry into force," she said at the European Commission Midday press briefing.
She added that the European Commission is currently awaiting the publication of the final version of this law "with the view of studying its content."
