KIEV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th September, 2018) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday will hand a note regarding the country's termination of the Russian-Ukrainian Friendship Treaty to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, first deputy speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Iryna Herashchenko said.

"Today is the president's birthday. He is celebrating his birthday at work. On September 26, he [Poroshenko] will speak at the session of the UN General Assembly and hand Secretary-General Antonio Guterres a diplomatic note on the non-renewal of the Russian-Ukrainian Friendship Treaty," Herashchenko said on Facebook.

Earlier in September, Poroshenko promulgated the decision of the country's National Security and Defense Council to end the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had received a note regarding the intention, adding that the document would terminate on April 1, 2019.

The Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia was signed in 1997. It is a key document regulating bilateral relations that provides for a strategic partnership between the two countries. Russia expressed its regrets over Ukraine's decision to not prolong the agreement.
