Kiev Urges NATO To Influence Hungary Blocking Alliance's Cooperation With Ukraine

Deputy Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Iryna Herashchenko said on Tuesday she had addressed the head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Rasa Jukneviciene, with a request to influence Hungary's stand on the alliance's cooperation with Ukraine.

KIEV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) Deputy Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Iryna Herashchenko said on Tuesday she had addressed the head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Rasa Jukneviciene, with a request to influence Hungary's stand on the alliance's cooperation with Ukraine.

Budapest consistently blocks meetings of the NATO-Ukraine commission at the level of heads of state and government over its tensions with Kiev, prompted by Ukraine's education law.

"I have called on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to exert influence on Hungary that is using its membership in the alliance to block the work of the NATO-Ukraine commission, which is inconsistent with the spirit of good neighborliness, partnership and cooperation," Herashchenko said on Facebook after her meeting with Jukneviciene.

The education law, which sparked the Ukrainian-Hungarian standoff, was adopted by Kiev last September and stripped national minority children in Ukraine of the right to study in their native language.
