Labour Leader Corbyn Calls Brexit Talks With EU Officials 'Positive'

Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the UK opposition Labour Party, on Thursday called the talks with EU officials in Brussels about the United Kingdom's upcoming exit from the European Union "positive."

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st March, 2019) Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the UK opposition Labour Party, on Thursday called the talks with EU officials in Brussels about the United Kingdom's upcoming exit from the European Union "positive."

Corbyn traveled to Brussels on Thursday to meet with European Chief Negotiator for the United Kingdom Exiting the European Union Michel Barnier to discuss an alternative Brexit plan to UK Prime Minister Theresa May's exit deal, which has been rejected by the UK Parliament twice.

"This morning's meetings have been positive," Corbyn told reporters.

The opposition leader said that the lawmakers had discussed an "constructive alternative" to May's deal.

May will speak to EU officials in Brussels later in the day in a bid to persuade them to grant her a June 30 extension to the upcoming March 29 Brexit deadline.

The European Union needs to approve the extension unanimously by all 28 member states to pass the delay. France has threatened to reject the extension request if May does not provide sufficient guarantees that the UK Parliament will approve her Brexit deal.

The UK government has been in crisis as days are counting down to the March 29 Brexit deadline. If the UK lawmakers do not receive an extension and agree to a formalized Brexit deal with the European Union, the United Kingdom faces a "hard exit" from the bloc, meaning the economies of both sides would be strongly affected due to a lack of economic regulations in place.
