CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th April, 2019) The League of Arab States's (LAS) foreign ministers will gather for an emergency meeting at the organization's headquarters in Cairo on April 21 in the presence of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, local media reported on Monday.
According to the MENA news agency, the meeting will be convened at the request of Palestine. The request has already been approved by a number of Arab states, including Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan and Somalia.
It is expected that the ministers will discuss the latest developments on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
During the recent elections in Israel, the state's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, pledged that he would extend Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank and create Greater Israel from the sea to the Jordan River.
He also added that he would never allow the creation of the Palestinian state in the way that the international community viewed it.
Palestine remains only partially recognized as a state and claims the territories of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. In 1947, the United Nations worked out a plan to put an end to the conflict, giving most of the West Bank and Gaza to Palestine. Israel occupied the territories 20 years later during the Six-Day War but claims to have withdrawn all its forces from Gaza in 2005. However, the United Nations still considers some of the Palestinian territories to be occupied by Israel.
