MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 01st March, 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented Friday on the failure of both Russian and US draft resolutions on Venezuela in the UN Security Council by saying that the right to veto was created for the sake of preventing the council from adopting destructive documents.
"Both resolutions are rejected. This does not mean that one of these drafts was more legitimate than the other...
If the right of the veto was applied, it means that the resolution does not have legitimate basis and can not be presented as something more positive than another draft resolution," Lavrov said.
"The Founding Fathers of the United Nations proceeded from the fact that it is inadmissible for the position of one of the Security Council's permanent members to be ignored. They knew very well from previous history that otherwise decisions would be unsustainable and even destructive," Lavrov added.
