Leaked Memo Reveals Tory Secret Plan to Replace Incumbent Prime Minister in 2019 - Reports

A leaked document of the UK Conservative Party showed that the Tories have been examining a plan providing for the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019 and her subsequent replacement by one of the candidates from a pre-established list, local media reported.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) A leaked document of the UK Conservative Party showed that the Tories have been examining a plan providing for the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019 and her subsequent replacement by one of the candidates from a pre-established list, local media reported.

The Telegraph newspaper released a document approved in April that suggests a scenario in which the Conservative Private Members' Committee, also known as the 1922 Committee, will call on May to step down shortly after March 2019.

A list of May's possible successors is attached to the document and shows among others the Names of former Brexit Secretary David Davis, Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, State Secretary for Environment, food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove and former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Every candidate on the list has his or her own characteristic. Thus, Davis' profile says "claims not to be interested, but is. Won't succeed," while Johnson's feature calls him "bookies favourite," but doubts his chances to succeed.

The United Kingdom has been in political crisis threatening to cost May her leadership since the prime minister announced in July the softening of Brexit conditions, which was followed by resignations of Davis and Johnson. In addition, voices have been raised calling for another vote on the country's exiting the European Union and a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister May.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum in 2016. The Brexit negotiations officially kicked off in June 2017 and are expected to be completed by the end of March 2019.
