CARACAS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th February, 2019) Members of left-wing youth-movements from around the world have arrived in Caracas to participate in events in support of the Venezuelan government and President Nicolas Maduro, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Monday.
On their first day in Venezuela, Maduro's supporters from Russia, Europe, Africa, Northern and Latin America have met with members of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, chaired by the president, and Venezuelan education Minister Aristobulo Isturiz.
"It is very important that we are supported by countries that are far away Africa, Asia and many others. By coming here they show us that, in the end, we are not alone and [that we] can win this battle with the support of other countries, as the United States is trying to convince everyone today that we are alone and are dying without food and medicine," one of the coordinators of the event on the part of the Venezuelan government told Sputnik.
The crisis in Venezuela sparked in January after Juan Guaido, the leader of the opposition-run Venezuelan National Assembly, proclaimed himself the country's interim president, since the opposition refuses to recognize Maduro's re-election last year and calls for another vote to be held.
Dozens of other countries that have also voiced their concerns about the legitimacy of Maduro's re-election have endorsed Guaido. Russia and China, as well as several other states, have refused to support the opposition leader and backed Maduro as the country's legitimate president.
