French President Emmanuel Macron later on Friday will head to the city of Strasbourg, where a deadly shooting incident near a Christmas market occurred earlier this week, local media reported, citing the Elysee Palace.
On Tuesday, an attacker opened fire close to the famed Christmas market, leaving two people killed, one person brain-dead and over 12 other people injured. The gunman was identified by police as a local resident named Cherif Chekatt, 29, who had been known to the law enforcement for previous offenses.
Late on Thursday, the French interior minister confirmed that the suspected shooter had been killed by police.
Macron wants to support the victims' families, as well as thank the law enforcement officers who participated in the manhunt and patrolled the city, according to France Info broadcaster.
The Islamic State terror group (IS, banned in Russia) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack in Strasbourg.
