Two million Venezuelans signed a letter, in which they demand that the United States stop its interference in Venezuela's domestic affairs, President of the Bolivarian republic Nicolas Maduro said Friday
"Our country is more than ever ready to fight for its independence, for its rights, for its rights to peace. In less than 24 hours, two million Venezuelans signed the letter of peace, which we will send to the White House," Maduro told reporters.
Tensions in Venezuela escalated over two weeks ago when Venezuelan opposition parliament speaker Juan Guaido declared himself interim president, disputing last year's re-election of incumbent leader Nicolas Maduro.
Guaido was almost immediately recognized by the United States and some other countries. Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and Uruguay were among those that have voiced their support for Maduro as the country's legitimately elected president.
US President Donald Trump confirmed in an interview with the CBS broadcaster that US military intervention in Venezuela was "an option."
